Although there are several impressive printers on the market to meet the needs of photographers, graphics or intensive users who need a lot of color for their presentations and reproductions of images, there will always be a need for solid in the office work which has to churn rowing and reams of documents in black and white.

Epson AcuLaser range has been meeting this need for a certain time and later descendants, the M4000, Epson is the highest specification monochrome laser printer yet. Reassuring heavy at 21.5 kg, you will probably need a colleague to this maneuver in place. Yet despite this, it comes in a surprisingly compact, squarish body measuring 404mm (H) x 428mm (W) x 480mm (D).

Once all the retaining strip is removed, it is simply a question of lifting the face down on the high plateau, rising in the toner cartridge, to fill two trays of paper before and running. As a centrally positioned paperless, there is a control panel on the front right that allows most orders to be held by the LCD screen and the circular wheel. Although this rate is standard on most Epson printers now, it would have been useful to have an adjustable LCD.

The M4000 is available in three versions, the basic standard model, M4000DN which includes a duplex add-on and M4000DTN which has two duplex and a paper cassette further increase the basis of 700 sheets (150 in the multipurpose tray and 550 in the main tray) to 1250 sheets.

The three models can also support an optional stacker document (which can sort and separate the different jobs) and in terms of results, you can produce up to 500 sheets on the face down tray at the front, a supplement of 70 sheets on the face - until bin at the back and up to 500 on the receiver module. Memory can also be promoted on the basis of 64 MB to 576MB and you can even install an extra 37GB of disk space.

You have a network connection via an Ethernet port, greater speed, USB 2.0 and - a rare sight these days - a parallel interface (no doubt useful if a link to an old computer).

With a resolution of 1200 dpi, the results are sharp and clear and, with a maximum speed of 43ppm for sheets of A4 paper (from time to time we ousted 45ppm), you’re looking at about 15 minutes to run 500 leaves for the worst. And it is not even particularly strong.
